Every time you remember it, you change it

Someone you remember. Nothing leaves your device.

Recalled 0 times

As it was

Each recall is a real JPEG encode and decode — an 8×8 DCT‑II round trip quantised on the luminance table from ITU‑T T.81, the JPEG standard itself. The quality never changes. Nothing here dials the damage up; the same operation is applied to its own output, over and over.

Re‑encoding on a fixed grid barely degrades at all — it settles after two passes, so “every save destroys a JPEG” is mostly untrue. What destroys it is the grid moving between saves. So every recall lands somewhere slightly different, and the loss compounds and never settles. Detail goes first; what lasts longest is the gist — which is what recall does to memory, too.
